The Friesian Horse
About the Friesian Horse Breed ........
The Friesian Horse originated in Friesland, a province of The Netherlands. Originally these beautiful
animals were imported to North America in the seventeenth century, but due to extensive
cross-breeding the Friesian Breed was totally lost. The breed was not reintroduced to North America
until 1974.
The Friesian horse has a reputation for it's wonderful disposition and noble and striking physical
characteristics. The breed characteristics include a noble head, clear intelligent eyes and small
alert ears. The Friesian has fluid, elegant and suspended gaits which are emphasized by feathering
on the lower legs, a thick mane and beautiful long tail. They are jet black, and a horse of luxurious
and proud appearance, full of personality, honest and eager to work.
Friesians were sought after as war horses by Friesian soldiers and knights during the crusades,
because of their agility and strength. Today they are becoming very popular as dressage and driving
horses. Because of their fairy tales looks and presence, they have appeared in many movies over
the years.
